Dating Safety Tips
Dating in recovery takes courage. These tips are designed to help you stay safe and protect your sobriety.
Before Meeting
- •Do a video call first — it confirms they are who they say they are
- •Tell a trusted friend where you're going, who you're meeting, and when you expect to be back
- •Check their profile is verified (look for the shield badge)
- •Trust your gut — if something feels off before the date, it's OK to cancel
Choosing Venues
- •Suggest alcohol-free venues — coffee shops, parks, activity-based dates
- •Browse our sober date ideas for inspiration
- •Pick somewhere public with good transport links
- •Avoid bars and pubs, especially in early recovery — you don't need to test yourself
- •Activity dates (walks, galleries, climbing) take the pressure off conversation
Sobriety-Specific Advice
- •You don't owe anyone an explanation of your recovery story on a first date
- •Share what you're comfortable with, when you're comfortable
- •Watch for people who pressure you about substances or minimise your sobriety
- •If your date orders alcohol or suggests a bar, it's OK to say no or leave
- •Your sobriety comes first — always
During the Date
- •Keep your phone charged and on you
- •Have your own transport — don't rely on your date for a lift
- •Don't feel obligated to stay if you're uncomfortable
- •Meet in public for at least your first few dates
- •Limit personal info you share (home address, workplace) until you know them better
After the Date
- •Check in with your friend or sponsor — how did it go?
- •Trust your instincts about whether to see them again
- •Report any concerning behaviour through the app
- •If something didn't feel right, talk to your support network
- •Take your time — there's no rush
